Spring Break Update
The past two weeks have been a very busy
time for some of our NSAAC athletes.
First, the Provincial Basketball
Championships followed by the annual Senior Bowl football camp. We
have just returned from both events much in need of a Spring Break
ourselves!
Basketball:
The frustration for the Vancouver
College Fighting Irish continues. Not since 1967 have they
raised the AAA Boys Championship trophy and, sadly, 2011
proved to be another "close, but no cigar" experience for the Irish.
Heading into the tournament, which truly was a wide-open one this
year, the Irish swept into the final full of hopes to make it a AAA
Double - football and basketball - win.
Coming up against a very athletic team
in the RC Palmer Griffins, the Irish got out to a big lead (19 - 2)
in the first quarter but the Griffins roared back riding some
outstanding 3-point shooting and aggressive defense. The final
result? - the Griffins won their first Championship 71-63 and the
Irish had to settle for the Silver Medal once again.
Congratulations to
Reiner Theil of the Irish as he was selected to the
First All Star Team. Check the video of the Semi Final game

last week at the BC Lions training facility followed by the
East/West All Star Game at Empire Field on Saturday.
The Senior Bowl, run by Football BC,

Thursday afternoon's practice is
traditionally BC Lion's Practice with the Pro's day and among
the participating BC Lions' players were Justin Sorenson and Doug
Goldsby (two former Senior Bowl'ers) on hand to pass on their
experience.

included
Cecil Belanger (QB), Tyler Fong (QB), JT
Fernandez (DE) and Greg Finley (RB/DB).

PRECISION KICKING INC
"Special Teams account for 1/3 of
the game!"
How many times have you heard that from
coaches? True, special teams are a critical part of the
football game but how do punters and place kickers learn their
craft? It's a fact that the majority of coaches either don't
know how to teach the correct techniques or simply don't spend a lot
of time in instruction.
Here's a solution for you:.....PRECISION
KICKING INC offers punting and place kicking
instruction in Canada, by Canadians for
Canadians.

Carey Lapa
It is with deep sadness and regret that
we note the passing of long-time Terry Fox football coach Carey Lapa
who passed away suddenly on Sunday, January 9, 2011.
Lapa, 51, died on Sunday morning from an
apparent heart attack following an early morning workout while he
was on the way home to join his fellow Terry Fox coaches to watch an
NFL playoff game.
He was without doubt one of the most
popular teacher/coaches at Terry Fox and was described by both
students and staff as a person who always had time to spend with you
no matter what else was going on.
To quote one of students: "He treated
everyone like family. A big, jolly man who was always the one
to push us to our limits and to strive to be the best. We did
not lose a teacher, but rather, gained an angel."
From a personal perspective, Carey has
been a good friend for over 30 years and we will really miss his
thoughtfulness, caring and great sense of humor.
Carey, a native of Kamloops, attended
Kamloops High School prior to joining the UBC Thunderbirds where he
was a member of the 1982 Vanier Cup winning team.....a team that has
been described by TSN as the best football team in the history of
the then CIAU.
Carey, along with his 1982
teammates was inducted into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame and in 1983
he was drafted by the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the CFL but opted to
return to the Thunderbirds to complete his degree. He was
named to the Canada West All Star team in 1985.
Following teaching/coaching stints at
Kamloops High School and Centennial Secondary, Carey joined the
staff at Terry Fox in 1998 and was an integral member of the
coaching staff that bought the Ravens to the pinnacle of high school
football in BC. He was a member of countless Senior Bowl and
Western Canada All Star Camp coaching staffs and always brought a
cheerful and fun-loving attitude with him.
Carey is pre-deceased by his father
Andrew and his brother Kevin. Our condolences go to his mother
Erna and brother Kent as well to all the students and staff of the
Terry Fox Ravens.
He will be sorely missed.

AAA Varsity
Subway Bowl
Congratulations to
Nick and
Stephen Blanchette,
Brydon Cotter and
Reiner Theil and
the Vancouver College Fighting Irish on their outstanding 28-14
victory over the Terry Fox Ravens in the 2010 AAA Subway Bowl.
The win marks the first championship
in 16 years (since 1994) and avenges their 2006 loss to the
Ravens.
Despite being in the Championship
game six times since 1996 the Frank Gnup Trophy had eluded the
Irish's grasp.....sometimes by the slimmest of margins (1996:
25-22 loss to Richmond; 2004: 21-19 loss to Rick Hansen; 2005:
7-6 loss to WJ Mouat; 2006: 21-18 loss to Terry Fox).
Finally the Frank Gnup Trophy will
reside at 5400 Cartier Street in Vancouver for at least the next
twelve months.
Congratulations to Coach Todd
Bernett and all the Irish players.
Game Highlights will be posted soon
AA Varsity Subway
Bowl
The John Barsby Bulldogs completed
their perfect season with a 53-27 shellacking of the Handsworth
Royals.
The Barsby defense, led by Junior
defensive end Jordan Kuziek,
played its usual aggressive style while Handsworth could
find no way of stopping the Barsby offense which, surprisingly,
featured a potent passing attack.
The Bulldogs, known for their
punishing running game, used the run to set up three passing
touchdowns which is more than the entire season output.
The win marks the second AA
Championship for the Bulldogs in the last ten years....their
first coming in 2000 with a 22-14 win over the now defunct John
Oliver Jokers.
Congratulations to Coach Rob
Stevenson and the Barsby Bulldogs!
AAA Junior
Varsity Subway Bowl
Hoping to make it a perfect day for
the Fighting Irish, the Vancouver College JV's took the field
against the powerful Mt Douglas Rams. But it was not to be
as the Rams prevailed with a decisive 43-28 victory to win their
second consecutive Junior Varsity Championship.
After defeating Mission 61-21 in
2009 to win the AA Championship the JV Rams followed the Seniors
into the higher AAA Conference.
AA Junior Varsity
Subway Bowl
Like the JV Fighting Irish the JV
Barsby Bulldogs hoped to make it a perfect day but, alas, it
also was not to be.
The bulldogs ran into a red-hot
Mission Roadrunner team and went down to defeat 38-8.
For the Mission Roadrunner the win
marked their first ever football championship for the school.
Congratulations!

Saturday was a
day to toss out the rankings. Here's
a look at the games played at UBCs'

But before we
start, here's next week's varsity
championship game times, with the

Mouat 3
VANCOUVER -- Last
season, it was last second
heartbreak for the Vancouver College
Fighting Irish in the Subway Bowl
Triple A semifinals.
On Saturday,
however, the Hawks could just never
get untracked against a Van College
defence that nullified its run game
and put an aggressive shadow on all
of Mouat's prime pass-catching
threats.
The Irish,
featuring
Nick Blanchette,
Stephen Blanchette,
Reiner Theil and
Brydon Cotter, opened the
scoring on a 12-yard run but the
Hawks had a quick answer with a
28-yard Tanner Strauss field goal.
However the Hawks
didn't seem to get another quality
sniff the rest of the way.
And the deep
backfield of the Irish kept it's
legs fresh all evening as the Irish
finished the scoring off with six
minutes remaining with a four-yard
rushing score.
The Irish will
meet Terry Fox for the first time in
a B.C. final since losing to Fox in
the 2006 championship.

You're

the best

On
Saturday
in the

at UBC's

this

DOUBLE A
No. 3
John Barsby 28 No. 2 Mission 0
VANCOUVER -- The
John Barsby Bulldogs spent an entire
opening half trying to figure out
how to break down the run defence of
the Mission Roadunners. But once
they did, the floodgates opened.
Taking a 7-0 lead
into the second half of its Subway
Bowl semifinal clash with the
Roadrunners, the Bulldogs just kept
pounding the rock and that
persistence paid off in the third
quarter as the Bulldogs scored three
times in a span of just over six
minutes to take a 20-0 lead before
adding one more in the fourth frame.
John Barsby will
go up against the Handsworth Royals
at 3:00 pm on Saturday.
No. 4
Handsworth 20 No. 1 Windsor 10
VANCOUVER -- The
Windsor Dukes opened the B.C. high
school Double A football season in
early September with the No. 1
ranking and never surrendered it, an
honor well deserved for a team that
always seemed to win the turnover
battle.
In fact in its
20-14 win over North Vancouver rival
and No. 4-ranked Handsworth Royals
earlier this season, head coach Jim
Schuman stressed an important part
of the victory was staying away from
the fumbles and interceptions that
seem to plague every team.
On Saturday,
however, the Dukes lost the turnover
battle, and in turn, their chance to
return to the Subway Bowl B.C. final
next Saturday at Empire Field after
a turnover-plagued first half
brought on, in part, by the defence
of the Royals.
After
surrendering a field goal to the
Dukes on its opening possession,
Handsworth scored on three of
Windsor's four first-half turnovers,
beating their rivals 20-10 at UBC's
Thunderbird Stadium and putting
themselves in position to win the
school's second B.C. crown in four
seasons. The Royals are set to meet
the winner of Saturday's second
semifinal between No. 2 Mission and
No. 3 John Barsby.

Report
No. 3 Vancouver College
49 vs. No. 5 St. Thomas More 2
VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver
College Fighting Irish lived up
to its ranking on Friday night.
The Irish, who have been ranked
No. 3 the entire season,
advanced to next weekend's
Triple A Subway Bowl semifinals,
scoring 28 points of its 42
first-half points off turnovers
en route to an 49-2 win over the
No. 5-ranked St. Thomas More
Knights of Burnaby at UBC's
Thunderbird Stadium.
When Vancouver College then went
to the air it was to
Reiner
Theil who caught several passes
- one a 17 yard touchdown
reception.
The Irish offensive line
anchored by
Nick Blanchette
and
Brydon Cotter gave the Irish
quarterbacks and running backs
the opportunity to pass and run
at will.
Defensively the Irish played a
shut-down defense, featuring
Stephen Blanchette, and
did not allow the Knights' wide
open offense any chance to get
untracked.
The Irish will now play
Abbotsford's No. 2-ranked W.J.
Mouat Hawks in one of the Semi
Finals on Saturday

Seaquam's Keane Fraser

Roadrunners in the snow on
Saturday at Thunderbird Stadium.
(Les Bazso, PNG)
It was a fun game to watch, but
certainly not a fun game to
lose. And the Seahawks gave
everything they had.
After losing its top player,
All Star running back Greg Finley, to an
injury late in the regular
season, the Seahawks marched
Grade 10 running back Mark Lego
out into centre stage, and he
showed poise beyond his years.
Despite an outstanding outing by
senior All Star
receiver/defensive back
Keane
Fraser and exceptional offensive
and defensive line play by
Mark Anglin, the Seahawks just
couldn't quite control the much
bigger Mission team finally
succumbing to a 37-34 Double
Overtime loss.
Mission moves on the Semi Finals
next Saturday to play the John
Barsby Bulldogs.

The
John Barsby Bulldogs are Final
Four bound.
The high-energy squad from
Nanaimo rode an excellent
defensive effort, led by
Jordan Kuziek, that held visiting
Pitt Meadows off the scoreboard
until early in the fourth
quarter.
Meanwhile, it's deep ground
attack continued to find success
scoring all four touchdowns on
the ground. Each of the four
Barsby touchdowns was followed
by a two-point convert.

Centennial Centaurs 53 Mount Douglas
Rams 28
Centennial set
the tone on the opening drive of the
game with a double-reverse halfback
option that went 56 yards for a
touchdown and it got worse for the
Rams from there as the Centaurs ran
off to a 46-12 halftime lead.
Despite spirited
defensive play by
Tyler Fong
who also threw for one touchdown and
ran in for a 2-point convert, the
Centaurs proved too much for the
Rams.
St.
Thomas More Knights 33 New
Westminster Hyacks 12
Not
since the days of the old Golden
Jock Bowl of the '70's (an annual
cross-street rivalry between Knights
and the Hyacks) had there been a
real buzz in the air
surrounding a big rivalry game that
came in the wildcard round of the
Subway Bowl playoffs.
On this night the
Knights prevailed with a hard-fought
33-12 victory.
Actually, it's a credit to the
Hyacks' defence that the Knights
only scored 33 points
In a game that
was locked at 13-12 in favor of STM
for virtually the entire third
quarter, the Knights scored three
touchdowns on three straight
possessions, the final two via
Hyacks' turnovers.
It's too bad that
the Knights won't have the Golden
Jock Cup to put in their
trophy case....it had been in the
safe-keeping of the then New
Westminster head coach but when the
Knights were victorious in 1978
(which incidentally was the last
game played by the Hyacks until the
program was re-generated in the
2000's) and it came time to present
the trophy, it had
mysteriously vanished.
Led by team
captain
Ross Hilliam
on defense the Knights caused the
Hyacks to cough up the ball on seven
occasions. Unfortunately for
the Knights, junior linebacker
Tim Jackson
re-injured his shoulder and is
doubtful for the next round of the
playoffs when the Knights go up
against another perennial rival the
Vancouver College Fighting Irish on
Friday in the quarterfinal round at
UBC.
Prince George Polars 0 No. 5 Seaquam
Seahawks 62
The
weekly grind of playing in one of
Double-A's toughest conference's
paid off for North Delta's Seaquam
Seahawks on Friday at Kamloops'
Hillside Stadium.
The
Seahawks showcased the depth and
dominance of its running game,
carrying 34 times as a team for 389
yards in a 62-0 win over Northern
Conference champion Prince George
Polars.
There
was no mistaking Seaquam's
dominance. Even without
Conference MVP
Greg Finley, who was
injured early in last week's Coastal
Conference win against Ballenas, the
Seahawks found ways to move the ball
along the ground.
Keane Fraser
caught two touchdown passes, one for
29 yards and the other for 58 yards
while the defensive line led by
Mark Anglin
dominated the much larger Polars'
offensive line and accounted for
five sacks and seven tackles for a
loss
The
Seahawks now advance to face the No.

Vancouver College Fighting Irish
(6-2, 4-0) roared to a decisive 43-7
win over North Vancouver's visiting
Carson Graham Eagles (3-4, 3-1) at
O'Hagan Field.
Reiner Theil,
with a 21-yard field goal and
several key catches and tackles,
contributed to moving the College's
record to 4-0 in the conference.
The return of
Nick Blanchette to the offensive
line, following a couple of weeks
off due to a mild concussion, as
well as the continuing outstanding
play of junior offensive tackle
Brydon Cotter, allowed the Irish
running backs to run at will over
the Eagles.
Defensively the Irish got another
great game from junior linebacker
Stephen Blanchette.
Next week the Irish travel to
