Spring Break Update

The past two weeks have been a very busy time for some of our NSAAC athletes.

First, the Provincial Basketball Championships followed by the annual Senior Bowl football camp. We have just returned from both events much in need of a Spring Break ourselves!

Basketball:

The frustration for the Vancouver College Fighting Irish continues.  Not since 1967 have they raised the AAA Boys Championship  trophy and, sadly, 2011 proved to be another "close, but no cigar" experience for the Irish.  Heading into the tournament, which truly was a wide-open one this year, the Irish swept into the final full of hopes to make it a AAA Double - football and basketball - win.

Coming up against a very athletic team in the RC Palmer Griffins, the Irish got out to a big lead (19 - 2) in the first quarter but the Griffins roared back riding some outstanding 3-point shooting and aggressive defense.  The final result? - the Griffins won their first Championship 71-63 and the Irish had to settle for the Silver Medal once again.

Congratulations to Reiner Theil of the Irish as he was selected to the First All Star Team. Check the video of the Semi Final game here

Football:

The annual Senior Bowl camp was held last week at the BC Lions training facility followed by the East/West All Star Game at Empire Field on Saturday.

The Senior Bowl, run by Football BC,  features the top 100 graduating Grade 12 players from around the Province and has provided a showcase for many outstanding young players for over 40 years.

Thursday afternoon's practice is traditionally BC Lion's Practice with the Pro's day and among the participating BC Lions' players were Justin Sorenson and Doug Goldsby (two former Senior Bowl'ers) on hand to pass on their experience.

NSAAC members who took part in the camp included Cecil Belanger (QB), Tyler Fong (QB), JT Fernandez (DE) and Greg Finley (RB/DB).

Greg Finley was named the West Team Defensive Player of the Game while Tyler Fong was named the Most Improved Quarterback.

NSAAC Endorses PRECISION KICKING INC

"Special Teams account for 1/3 of the game!

How many times have you heard that from coaches?  True, special teams are a critical part of the football game but how do punters and place kickers learn their craft?  It's a fact that the majority of coaches either don't know how to teach the correct techniques or simply don't spend a lot of time in instruction.

Here's a solution for you:.....PRECISION KICKING INC offers punting and place kicking instruction in Canada, by Canadians for Canadians.

Camps are being planned for Toronto, Regina and Vancouver.  Check them out here

Carey Lapa

It is with deep sadness and regret that we note the passing of long-time Terry Fox football coach Carey Lapa who passed away suddenly on Sunday, January 9, 2011.

Lapa, 51, died on Sunday morning from an apparent heart attack following an early morning workout while he was on the way home to join his fellow Terry Fox coaches to watch an NFL playoff game.

He was without doubt one of the most popular teacher/coaches at Terry Fox  and was described by both students and staff as a person who always had time to spend with you no matter what else was going on.

To quote one of students: "He treated everyone like family.  A big, jolly man who was always the one to push us to our limits and to strive to be the best.  We did not lose a teacher, but rather, gained an angel."

From a personal perspective, Carey has been a good friend for over 30 years and we will really miss his thoughtfulness, caring and great sense of humor.

Carey, a native of Kamloops, attended Kamloops High School prior to joining the UBC Thunderbirds where he was a member of the 1982 Vanier Cup winning team.....a team that has been described by TSN as the best football team in the history of the then CIAU.

Carey, along with his 1982 teammates was inducted into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame and in 1983 he was drafted by the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the CFL but opted to return to the Thunderbirds to complete his degree.  He was named to the Canada West All Star team in 1985.

Following teaching/coaching stints at Kamloops High School and Centennial Secondary, Carey joined the staff at Terry Fox in 1998 and was an integral member of the coaching staff that bought the Ravens to the pinnacle of high school football in BC.  He was a member of countless Senior Bowl and Western Canada All Star Camp coaching staffs and always brought a cheerful and fun-loving attitude with him.

Carey is pre-deceased by his father Andrew and his brother Kevin.  Our condolences go to his mother Erna and brother Kent as well to all the students and staff of the Terry Fox Ravens.

He will be sorely missed.

Championship Reviews

Girls Volleyball:

Despite going 3-1 at the AA Girls Volleyball Championship round the best the STM Knights, led by Sarah Hughes,  could do was finish in 9th place (out of 16).  On the good side the Knights defeated arch-rival Holy Cross Crusaders in two straight sets in their final game.

AAA Varsity Subway Bowl

Congratulations to Nick and Stephen Blanchette, Brydon Cotter and Reiner Theil and the Vancouver College Fighting Irish on their outstanding 28-14 victory over the Terry Fox Ravens in the 2010 AAA Subway Bowl.

The win marks the first championship in 16 years (since 1994) and avenges their 2006 loss to the Ravens.

Despite being in the Championship game six times since 1996 the Frank Gnup Trophy had eluded the Irish's grasp.....sometimes by the slimmest of margins (1996: 25-22 loss to Richmond; 2004: 21-19 loss to Rick Hansen; 2005: 7-6 loss to WJ Mouat; 2006: 21-18 loss to Terry Fox).

Finally the Frank Gnup Trophy will reside at 5400 Cartier Street in Vancouver for at least the next twelve months.

Congratulations to Coach Todd Bernett and all the Irish players.

Game Highlights will be posted soon

AA Varsity Subway Bowl

The John Barsby Bulldogs completed their perfect season with a 53-27 shellacking of the Handsworth Royals.

The Barsby defense, led by Junior defensive end Jordan Kuziek, played its usual aggressive  style while Handsworth could find no way of stopping the Barsby offense which, surprisingly, featured a potent passing attack.

The Bulldogs, known for their punishing running game, used the run to set up three passing touchdowns which is more than the entire season output.

The win marks the second AA Championship for the Bulldogs in the last ten years....their first coming in 2000 with a 22-14 win over the now defunct John Oliver Jokers.

Congratulations to Coach Rob Stevenson and the Barsby Bulldogs!

AAA Junior Varsity Subway Bowl

Hoping to make it a perfect day for the Fighting Irish, the Vancouver College JV's took the field against the powerful Mt Douglas Rams.  But it was not to be as the Rams prevailed with a decisive 43-28 victory to win their second consecutive Junior Varsity Championship.

After defeating Mission 61-21 in 2009 to win the AA Championship the JV Rams followed the Seniors into the higher AAA Conference.

AA Junior Varsity Subway Bowl

Like the JV Fighting Irish the JV Barsby Bulldogs hoped to make it a perfect day but, alas, it also was not to be.

The bulldogs ran into a red-hot Mission Roadrunner team and went down to defeat 38-8.

For the Mission Roadrunner the win marked their first ever football championship for the school.

Congratulations!

Weekly Review - High School Football

Saturday was a day to toss out the rankings. Here's a look at the games played at UBCs' Thunderbird Stadium.

But before we start, here's next week's varsity championship game times, with the games being played at Empire Field:

3 p.m. -- No. 3 John Barsby vs. No. 4 Handsworth

7 p.m. -- No. 1 Terry Fox vs. No. 3 Vancouver College

TRIPLE A

No. 3 Vancouver College 27 No. 2 W.J. Mouat 3

VANCOUVER -- Last season, it was last second heartbreak for the Vancouver College Fighting Irish in the Subway Bowl Triple A semifinals.

On Saturday, however, the Hawks could just never get untracked against a Van College defence that nullified its run game and put an aggressive shadow on all of Mouat's prime pass-catching threats.

The Irish, featuring Nick Blanchette, Stephen Blanchette, Reiner Theil and Brydon Cotter, opened the scoring on a 12-yard run but the Hawks had a quick answer with a 28-yard Tanner Strauss field goal.

However the Hawks didn't seem to get another quality sniff the rest of the way.

And the deep backfield of the Irish kept it's legs fresh all evening as the Irish finished the scoring off with six minutes remaining with a four-yard rushing score.

The Irish will meet Terry Fox for the first time in a B.C. final since losing to Fox in the 2006 championship.

No. 1 Terry Fox 46 Centennial 13

VANCOUVER -- You're not going to get too many arguments if you call the undefeated 2008 Subway Bowl Triple A champion Terry Fox Ravens the best high school football team ever fielded in this province.

But just don't make the mistake of calling the 2010 Ravens their little brothers.

On Saturday in the B.C. semifinals at UBC's Thunderbird Stadium, this year's model rolled past its cross-town rivals, Coquitlam's Centennial Centaurs to the tune of 46-13. With the B.C. championship game next up on the docket at Empire Field, these No. 1-ranked Ravens are sitting with an 11-0 record.

So forget the comparisons and focus instead on just how dominant the Ravens' running game was on Saturday and how effectively its defence was able to slow the Centaurs' high-tempo attack.

And now, it's down to those final few practices that every team hopes they will be able to hold, the ones where they scheme to win a B.C. title.

DOUBLE A

No. 3 John Barsby 28 No. 2 Mission 0

VANCOUVER -- The John Barsby Bulldogs spent an entire opening half trying to figure out how to break down the run defence of the Mission Roadunners. But once they did, the floodgates opened.

Taking a 7-0 lead into the second half of its Subway Bowl semifinal clash with the Roadrunners, the Bulldogs just kept pounding the rock and that persistence paid off in the third quarter as the Bulldogs scored three times in a span of just over six minutes to take a 20-0 lead before adding one more in the fourth frame.

John Barsby will go up against the Handsworth Royals at 3:00 pm on Saturday.

No. 4 Handsworth 20 No. 1 Windsor 10

VANCOUVER -- The Windsor Dukes opened the B.C. high school Double A football season in early September with the No. 1 ranking and never surrendered it, an honor well deserved for a team that always seemed to win the turnover battle.

In fact in its 20-14 win over North Vancouver rival and No. 4-ranked Handsworth Royals earlier this season, head coach Jim Schuman stressed an important part of the victory was staying away from the fumbles and interceptions that seem to plague every team.

On Saturday, however, the Dukes lost the turnover battle, and in turn, their chance to return to the Subway Bowl B.C. final next Saturday at Empire Field after a turnover-plagued first half brought on, in part, by the defence of the Royals.

After surrendering a field goal to the Dukes on its opening possession, Handsworth scored on three of Windsor's four first-half turnovers, beating their rivals 20-10 at UBC's Thunderbird Stadium and putting themselves in position to win the school's second B.C. crown in four seasons. The Royals are set to meet the winner of Saturday's second semifinal between No. 2 Mission and No. 3 John Barsby.

Football - Quarter Final Report

No. 3 Vancouver College 49 vs. No. 5 St. Thomas More 2

VANCOUVER -- The Vancouver College Fighting Irish lived up to its ranking on Friday night.

The Irish, who have been ranked No. 3 the entire season, advanced to next weekend's Triple A Subway Bowl semifinals, scoring 28 points of its 42 first-half points off turnovers en route to an 49-2 win over the No. 5-ranked St. Thomas More Knights of Burnaby at UBC's Thunderbird Stadium.

When Vancouver College then went to the air it was to Reiner Theil who caught several passes - one a 17 yard touchdown  reception.

The Irish offensive line anchored by Nick Blanchette and Brydon Cotter gave the Irish quarterbacks and running backs the opportunity to pass and run at will.

Defensively the Irish played a shut-down defense, featuring Stephen Blanchette,  and did not allow the Knights' wide open offense any chance to get untracked.

The Irish will now play Abbotsford's No. 2-ranked W.J. Mouat Hawks in one of the Semi Finals on Saturday

No. 2 Mission 37 vs. No. 5 Seaquam 34 (2OT)

Seaquam's Keane Fraser is hounded by a pair of Roadrunners in the snow on Saturday at Thunderbird Stadium. (Les Bazso, PNG)

It was a fun game to watch, but certainly not a fun game to lose. And the Seahawks gave everything they had.

After losing its top player, All Star running back Greg Finley, to an injury late in the regular season, the Seahawks marched Grade 10 running back Mark Lego out into centre stage, and he showed poise beyond his years.

Despite an outstanding outing by senior All Star receiver/defensive back Keane Fraser and exceptional offensive and defensive line play by Mark Anglin, the Seahawks just couldn't quite control the much bigger Mission team finally succumbing to a 37-34 Double Overtime loss.

Mission moves on the Semi Finals next Saturday to play the John Barsby Bulldogs.

Pitt Meadows 7 at No. 3 John Barsby 32

The John Barsby Bulldogs are Final Four bound.

The high-energy squad from Nanaimo rode an excellent defensive effort, led by Jordan Kuziek,  that held visiting Pitt Meadows off the scoreboard until early in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, it's deep ground attack continued to find success scoring all four touchdowns on the ground. Each of the four Barsby touchdowns was followed by a two-point convert.

Centennial Centaurs 53 Mount Douglas Rams 28

Centennial set the tone on the opening drive of the game with a double-reverse halfback option that went 56 yards for a touchdown and it got worse for the Rams from there as the Centaurs ran off to a 46-12 halftime lead.

Despite spirited defensive play by Tyler Fong  who also threw for one touchdown and ran in for a 2-point convert, the Centaurs proved too much for the Rams.

St. Thomas More Knights 33 New Westminster Hyacks 12

Not since the days of the old Golden Jock Bowl of the '70's (an annual cross-street rivalry between Knights and the Hyacks) had there been a real buzz in the air surrounding a big rivalry game that came in the wildcard round of the Subway Bowl playoffs.

On this night the Knights prevailed with a hard-fought 33-12 victory.  Actually, it's a credit to the Hyacks' defence that the Knights only scored 33 points

In a game that was locked at 13-12 in favor of STM for virtually the entire third quarter, the Knights scored three touchdowns on three straight possessions, the final two via Hyacks' turnovers.

It's too bad that the Knights won't have the Golden Jock Cup  to put in their trophy case....it had been in the safe-keeping of the then New Westminster head coach but when the Knights were victorious in 1978 (which incidentally was the last game played by the Hyacks until the program was re-generated in the 2000's) and it came time to present the trophy,  it had mysteriously vanished.

Led by team captain Ross Hilliam on defense the Knights caused the Hyacks to cough up the ball on seven occasions.  Unfortunately for the Knights, junior linebacker Tim Jackson re-injured his shoulder and is doubtful for the next round of the playoffs when the Knights go up against another perennial rival the Vancouver College Fighting Irish on Friday in the quarterfinal round at UBC.

Prince George Polars 0 No. 5 Seaquam Seahawks 62

The weekly grind of playing in one of Double-A's toughest conference's paid off for North Delta's Seaquam Seahawks on Friday at Kamloops' Hillside Stadium.

The Seahawks showcased the depth and dominance of its running game, carrying 34 times as a team for 389 yards in a 62-0 win over Northern Conference champion Prince George Polars.

There was no mistaking Seaquam's dominance.  Even without Conference MVP Greg Finley, who was injured early in last week's Coastal Conference win against Ballenas, the Seahawks found ways to move the ball along the ground.

Keane Fraser caught two touchdown passes, one for 29 yards and the other for 58 yards while the defensive line led by Mark Anglin dominated the much larger Polars' offensive line and accounted for five sacks and seven tackles for a loss

The Seahawks now advance to face the No. 2-ranked Mission Roadrunners (Mainland 2) in the quarterfinal round on Saturday at 3:00 pm at UBC.

High School Football - Week #10  Key Games

No. 5 Seaquam 22 at Ballenas 14

Adversity reared its ugly head on Saturday for the road-weary Seaquam Seahawks (3-4-1, 3-2-0).

But the North Delta-based bunch didn't let an early first-quarter injury to star running back/linebacker Greg Finley get in their way as they fashioned a 22-14 win over a host Ballenas Whalers (4-4, 1-4) team that was battling for its playoff lives.

The Seahawks had entered the contest already knowing they were in the playoffs coming out of the Coastal Conference, because its cross-town rivals, the Sands Scorpions, had lost Friday in Nanaimo against the No. 3-ranked John Barsby Bulldogs.

"All credit to our kids," said Seaquam head coach Kris Pechet. "We came off a two-hour ferry ride and had a very, very short warm-up, maybe 25 minutes. We had nothing to play for in the sense we already knew we were in the playoffs, and Ballenas had to win to get in so they had a ton of incentive. Then we lost Greg in the first quarter so our kids really had to suck it up and play tough football."

Finley had actually opened the scoring by carrying three times on the opening drive, including a 12-yard touchdown run and a two-point convert run.

Seahawks defensive back Keane Fraser had a key interception and two big knockdowns while defensive lineman Mark Anglin was a dominant force gaining 1 1/2 sacks and several huge hits.

The Seahawks hit the road again on Friday for a first-round playoff game in Kamloops against Prince George .

Holy Cross 20 at No. 5 St. Thomas More 41

Burnaby's No. 5-ranked St. Thomas More Knights finished the regular season with a second-half burst in the Annual Pepsi Bowl that carries them head first into the post-season.

"I didn't think we played well in the first half and we can still clean up a lot of aspects in our game." said head coach Bernie Kully. " We recognize that we are a young team but we also recognize that the time we live in is now and we have to have a sense of urgency to our game. If you don’t execute and play well your season will be over. Tonight we played with a sense of urgency in the second half. Our goal is to keep improving and get better each chance we have."

Once again Grade 12 All Star Ross Hilliam and Grade 11 linebacker Tim Jackson played major roles in the Knights' victory with Hilliam making key catches and Jackson making several crunching tackles and picking off one pass.

The Knights will face cross-street rivals New Westminster Hyacks in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday at UBC

Mt. Douglas 37 at Carson Graham 20

A recovered onside kick to start the second half kick-started Victoria's Mt. Douglas Rams to a 37-20 win over the host Carson Graham Eagles on Friday, giving the Rams a best-ever second-place finish in the Western Conference standings.

"It really seemed to get our guys fired up and from that point on, our running game and our defense slowly took control of the game," said Mt. Douglas head coach Alexis Sanschagrin of the successful special teams play.

The Rams (7-3, 4-2) find themselves opening the playoff round on Saturday at UBC against the Eastern Conference's fourth-place Centennial Centaurs. Mt. Douglas and the defending B.C. champs will battle for the right to play Okanagan champion and No. 4-ranked Kelowna in the quarterfinals the following week.

Carson Graham had jumped out to a 14-12 lead at the half, but the Rams were unable to capitalize on two trips inside the red zone over the first half of the game.

Turnovers were huge. The Rams managed six interceptions -- two from safety/qb Tyler Fong who also recorded seven tackles.

No. 3 Vancouver College 27 at Notre Dame 6

In a series with as much tradition as the annual Archbishops' Trophy game, it's best to expect the unexpected.

The victory not only completes a perfect Western Conference season for the Irish (8-2, 5-0), it inches it ahead of the Jugglers in the overall series. Friday's game was the 54th meeting in the longest standing rivalry game in B.C. high school sports, and the Irish now lead it 27-26-1.

Once again  Reiner Theil proved he is something special with a 75 yard touchdown in the second half.

Brydon Cotter was a dominant force again on the offensive line.

The Irish enjoy a bye week as they await the winner of Saturday's New Westminster-St. Thomas More clash, which is a good thing for the Blanchette brothers (Nick & Stephen) as they both sat out the game with the flu.

Sands 13 at No. 3 John Barsby 49

Nanaimo's No. 3-ranked John Barsby Bulldogs (9-0, 5-0) rallied from an early deficit to finish with the first undefeated regular season in the program's 15-year history on Friday following a 49-13 win over North Delta's Sands Scorpions (2-5-1, 1-3-1).

"It was a real balanced day for us," explained Barsby head coach Rob Stevenson, whose team rushed for 204 yards and passed for 203 more. "We got a big day from our defensive line and that created opportunities for our linebackers and our secondary versus the run. And we got another monster effort from our special teams."

The defensive line was anchored once again by Grade 11 Jordan Kusiek

Weekend Update - High School Football

No. 3 John Barsby 24 at No. 5 Seaquam 22

Special teams carried the day and made the difference on Saturday for Nanaimo's No. 3-ranked John Barsby Bulldogs (8-0, 4-0).

The Bulldogs, featuring Jordan Kuziek,  remained the Coastal's only undefeated team after registering a pair of special team's touchdowns in a two-point win at North Delta's No. 5-ranked Seaquam Seahawks (2-4-1, 2-2-0).

The Seahawks once again got very strong games from Greg Finley (145 yds rushing, 9 tackles), Keane Fraser (1 interception, 7 tackles) and Marc Anglin (9 tackles)

Next up for the Seahawks: at Ballenas, Saturday, 2:00 pm

Sands 8 at Mt. Douglas 41

The Rams (6-3, 3-2) ventured out of conference one weekend before the end of the regular season, tuning up for a pivotal game next week against the Carson Graham Eagles by topping the Double A visiting Sands Scorpions (2-4-1, 1-2-1) by a 41-8 count in the provincial capital.

The Rams sat many of their Grade 12's for this game after the first half but senior quarterback Tyler Fong threw one touchdown pass before giving way to the junior quarterback in the second quarter.

Next for the Rams: at Carson Graham, Friday 3:45 pm.

No. 5 St. Thomas More 7 at No. 1 W.J. Mouat 35

A very young STMC Knights team took it on the chin on Friday in Abbotsford.  Despite inspired play by both senior rec/db Ross Hilliam and junior linebacker/db Tim Jackson, they just couldn't stay with the #1-ranked team in the province.

Next up for the Knights: the Pepsi Bowl against cross-town rival Holy Cross Crusaders.  Friday, Empire Field, 5:00 pm

Vancouver College 27 at Cheney, Wash. 20

CHENEY, WASH. -- No. 3-ranked Vancouver College (7-2, 4-0) may have gotten fooled by a triple-reverse play, but not much else perplexed the Fighting Irish on Friday as they took to the red turf at Eastern Washington University.

Reiner Theil had  two long touchdown strikes (44 yds & 70 yds) to lead the Irish to a 27-20 win.

Defensively , junior linebacker Stephen Blanchette had another strong outing while his older brother Nick along with Brydon Cotter are proving to be the strength of the Irish offensive line.

Next up for the Irish: Archbishop's Trophy  against Notre Dame at Empire Field, Friday 7:30 pm

Oct 25/10

High School Football Update Week #8

Carson Graham 7 at Vancouver College 43

Vancouver College Fighting Irish (6-2, 4-0) roared to a decisive 43-7 win over North Vancouver's visiting Carson Graham Eagles (3-4, 3-1) at O'Hagan Field.

Reiner Theil, with a 21-yard field goal and several key catches and tackles, contributed to moving the College's record to 4-0 in the conference.

The return of Nick Blanchette to the offensive line, following a couple of weeks off due to a mild concussion, as well as the continuing outstanding play of junior offensive tackle Brydon Cotter, allowed the Irish running backs to run at will over the Eagles.

Defensively the Irish got another great game from junior linebacker Stephen Blanchette.

Next week the Irish travel to Cheney, Washington for an exhibition game (due to West Vancouver folding their program) to get ready for the annual Archbishop Trophy - and final regular season - game against the Notre Dame Jugglers on November 5.

Centennial 27 at St. Thomas More 32

Mike Carney's touchdown pass to Ross Hilliam  with 30 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter led the St. Thomas More Knights to a heart-stopping 32-27 upset win over Coquitlam's No. 5-ranked Centennial Centaurs on Friday night at the Burnaby Lake Sports Complex.

Hilliam finished the day with four catches, two interceptions and ten tackles.

Defensively the Knights welcomed the return from injury of junior linebacker Tim Jackson who quickly re-established himself with several great tackles and excellent pass coverage.

The Knights are set to clash Friday (7:30 p.m.) in Abbotsford against the #1 ranked, high-flying W.J. Mouat Hawks.

Hugh Boyd 0 at John Barsby 39

Coming off a bye week may have taken a bit of the edge off the offense of Nanaimo's No. 3-ranked John Barsby Bulldogs (7-0, 3-0), but the defence played as well as it has all season.

Jordan Kuziek with three stops and a sack led the way for the Bulldogs who claimed their third shutout of the season, this time 39-0 over Richmond's Hugh Boyd Trojans (2-3-1, 0-3-1).

The Bulldogs travel to Seaquam, which had a bye last week, on  Saturday - kickoff : 1:30 pm

Oct 18/10

High School Football - Week #7 Update

Salmon Arm 6 at Vancouver College 46

VANCOUVER -- The Fighting Irish are picking up steam, even on a week in which they are playing out of the Western Conference.

On the day, the Irish rushed for three scores, got two touchdown passes including a 56-yard strike to Reiner Theil who was perfect with his converts and also kicked a 30-yard field goal.

The offensive line put in one of their best performances of the year anchored by senior guard Nick Blanchette and junior tackle Brydon Cotter.  Defensively junior linebacker Stephen Blanchette continued to show why he will be a Top Five recruit in 2012.

Sands 0 at Seaquam 26

NORTH DELTA -- In the Battle of North Delta, the Seaquam Seahawks (2-3-1, 2-1-0) responded with one of their best efforts of the campaign on Saturday, blanking the visiting, No. 3-ranked Sands Scorpions (2-2-1, 1-1-1) by a decisive 26-0 count.

After a scoreless first quarter, Seaquam got the ball rolling on a Keane Fraser interception that was returned to the Scorpions' 30-yard line, setting up a six-yard Greg Finley touchdown. Finley then capped a 50-yard drive with a four-yard scoring run for a 13-0 Seaquam lead at the half. In the third quarter, Finley broke things open with a 55-yard touchdown run. On the day Finley carried 14 times for 172 yards, scoring the first three touchdowns of the game.

The defense was led by nose guard Mark Anglin , returning to the lineup since an early season injury, who had nine tackles.

Mt. Douglas 24 at New Westminster 35

NEW WESTMINSTER -- Mt. Douglas knew they were facing a dangerous team in the New Westminster Hyacks (2-5, 2-1) and came on the short end against a desperate Hyack team.

Tyler Fong had 16 tackles

St. Thomas More 17 at Lord Tweedsmuir 14

STMC senior receiver Ross Hilliam scored on a 32 yard pass for one of the Knights' touchdowns and finished the game with eight catches for 93 yards.

Oct 12/10

High School Football Week #6 Update

Terry Fox 33 at St. Thomas More 0

No. 2-ranked Terry Fox Ravens of Port Coquitlam topped the host St. Thomas More Knights 33-0 in the Eastern Conference opener for both teams at Power Memorial Field.

The Knights (3-2, 0-1) might have played Terry Fox as tough as anyone has over an opening half this season, trailing just 14-0 at the break after enduring some tough luck.

A very young Knights squad, led by one of the few seniors on the team ,receiver/defensive back Ross Hilliam, just couldn't stay with the power, size and experience of the Ravens.

Next up for the Knights: at Lord Tweedsmuir. Friday, 2:00 pm

Seaquam 13 South Delta 15

The Sun Devils (1-2, 1-1), however, had just enough to hold on for a 15-13 win, stopping the Seahawks (1-3-1, 1-1-0) on fourth down at their own 35-yard line as time expired to win an ugly nail-biter.

Seaquam once again got strong performances from seniors Keane Fraser and Greg Finley, who rushed 23 times for 143 yards, scored the final Seaquam touchdown on a 16-yard run in the second half.

Next up: host Sands. Saturday, 1:30 pm

Vancouver College 34 at Mt. Douglas 16

Top Five Prospect Tyler Fong is starting to register on opposition radars more than most players in the league and the Fighting Irish defense knew they had to contain him to have any chance of success.

"Tyler Fong is really good and the one thing that we were concerned about was that when they spread you out, he is a running threat as well," said Bernett coach of the Irish.

After being contained for most of the game, Fong finished the game strong and threw two touchdown passes down the stretch drive of the contest.

For Vancouver College Reiner Theil scored one touchdown, one 42 yard field goal and was successful on all extra points.

Next for the Irish: host Salmon Arm, Saturday 1:00 pm (non-conference).

Next up for Mt Douglas: at New Westminster. Friday, 2:00 pm

John Barsby 56 at Ballenas 25

Nanaimo's John Barsby Bulldogs, featuring junior linebacker/defensive end Jordan Kuziek, are putting up points and gaining yards at an incredible pace.

On Friday, in the annual Border Battle, the Bulldogs (6-0, 2-0) gained 396 of their 472 total yards on the ground in a decisive win over the host Ballenas Whalers (3-2, 1-2).

BC High School Football Report - Week #4

Hugh Boyd 7 at Seaquam 8

The Seaquam Seahawks opened conference play on Saturday with a nail-biting 8-7 win over the Hugh Boyd Trojans thanks in large part to Greg Finley's 157 yards on 17 carries, one of which was for a 2-point conversion to secure the win. Finley also chipped in with one punt return for 22 yards and 3 tackles on defense. Safety Keane Fraser also turned in  solid game on defense with 3 tackles and one punt return for 43 yards.

Next up for the Knights: travel to Rutland for Friday night game....7:00 pm kick off

John Barsby 50 at Nanaimo 6

Week #2 BC High School Football Updates

WINDSOR 0 at MT. DOUGLAS 26

Quarterback Tyler Fong rushed for 96 yards and one score, and passed for 126 yards and another as the Rams ran their record to 2 - 0 in a re-match of the 2009 AA Provincial Championship game.

This week the Rams will meet perennial powerhouse W.J. Mouat (ranked #1) in their final pre-season game, and in what could be a preview of the AAA Championship, on Saturday in Abbotsford....kickoff is at 4:00 pm.

OKANAGAN-MISSION 6 at JOHN BARSBY 60

Swarming team defence and a deep and balanced ground game carried the day for the John Barsby Bulldogs in their 54-point win over the visiting Huskies from Kelowna's Okanagan-Mission.

Five sacks by the defence, including one by junior defensive end Jordan Kuziek who also ran the ball 3 times for 19 yards, stifled  the OKM offense.

VANCOUVER COLLEGE 14 at TERRY FOX 19

In a very tight struggle at Cunning Field on Friday, the Terry Fox Ravens endured to defeat the Vancouver College Fighting Irish despite great efforts from seniors Reiner Theil (Rec/LB/K) and Nick Blanchette (O/L).  Once again juniors Stephen Blanchette (LB) and Brydon Cotter (O/L) had solid outings.

Next up for the Irish: cross-town rivals St Thomas More Collegiate.....Saturday, 1:30 pm , O'Hagan Field.

ST. THOMAS MORE 29 at NOTRE DAME 13

St. Thomas More Collegiate Knights opened their season with a 29-13 win over traditional rivals, the Notre Dame Jugglers.

Sporting a new-look offense the Knights kept the Juggler's defense off balance the whole game and senior receiver/defensive back Ross Hilliam ( a 2010 Team BC player) played a huge part in their success with several key receptions - one of them for 64 yard touchdown - and making a number of great tackles from his safety position.

HOLY CROSS 26 at MISSION 39

The AAA Holy Cross Crusaders opened their season with loss on the road to AA Mission Roadrunners.  JT Fernandez had 2 tackles and1 sack on defense and carried the ball 4 times for 27 yards and one touchdown.

Holy Cross takes on Notre Dame at Burnaby Lake on Friday at 7:30 pm.

SEAQUAM 3 - CEDER PARK CHRISTIAN 44

A young inexperienced Seahawk team traveled down the I-5 to Memorial Stadium in the Shadow of the Seattle Space Needle on Saturday and took on the much-improved Eagles.

Despite some outstanding and spirited play by seniors defensive back/receiver Keane Fraser and running back/linebacker Greg Finley, the much bigger and quicker Eagles proved too much for the 'Hawks.

It doesn't get any easier this week for the Seahawks as they host the AAA Kelowna Owls in their annual pre-season game.

Kickoff is on Saturday at Seaquam....3:00 pm

Please Welcome Jordan Kuziek

Jordan, 6' 31/2" - 240#, is a multi-talented athlete who excels on football, basketball and wrestling at John Barsby High School in Nanaimo, BC.

On the football field he lines up at fullback and linebacker; in basketball he plays the post and in wrestling he does just about whatever he wants to do - this year he placed 5th in the Junior National Championships in the 92 Kg class.

He has just turned 16 and is entering his Grade 11 year at John Barsby.  Watching Jordan's progress for the next two years should be fun.
